The Weighted Roman Pilum

The Weighted Roman Pilum

The pilum was the Roman soldier’s secondary weapon, and was often used as a preemptive strike throwing spear. The pilum was a long spear and could be used to repel cavalry attacks or thrown at the enemy before engaging them in battle. The design of these weapons showed Roman ingenuity in warfare. The shaft of the pilum was made of a soft iron and was bent or broken upon contact with the target. This ensured that the enemy could not throw back the spear. The weighted pilum was introduced later in the Roman empire to balance the spear.

Our replica is superb and is designed closely to the original pila. The shaft is made of iron. It features a weighted ball in the middle of the pilum and a genuine hand grip.
